What is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic therapy is body-based psychotherapy. While somatic therapy sessions can, and usually do, involve talking the goal is to use the wisdom and knowledge we carry in our bodies to help us heal from past trauma and pain. Another way of putting it is that somatic therapy uses the body to unlock emotions and feelings that our minds may not even be conscious of, using the body as a gateway to help develop more awareness of the patterns and habits that can keep you stuck in your day to day life.

In a somatic therapy session, every intervention is always a suggestion and you are always free to say “no” at any time. However, you may be invited to move your body, to use your voice, or to strike a soft object in a way that keeps you and your body safe. You will be supported through all interventions by a student therapist who has completed at least 3 years of training in psychotherapeutic and somatic therapies. All student therapists are supervised by a registered psychotherapist who is licensed in Ontario by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario.

Is Somatic Therapy Right For Me?

Somatic therapy is most effective for treating trauma - either childhood trauma or trauma related to events that happened during adulthood. Trauma doesn’t have to be something big - a traumatic event is any situation that leaves an emotional or psychological mark on us, or that impacts how we show up in our lives.

Somatic therapy can be more intense than regular talk-based therapy. Using our bodies can bring up challenging emotions that might feel scary or overwhelming - feelings that our minds have protected us from feeling but that are affecting us anyway. It’s important to talk to your student therapist about what’s happening for you, and to discuss “in between session” feelings in your next session.

"As long as you keep secrets and suppress information, you are fundamentally at war with yourself…The critical issue is allowing yourself to know what you know. That takes an enormous amount of courage."”
